First-Year Learning Communities
FASS has recently launched FIRST-YEAR LEARNING COMMUNITIES (FLCs) to expand the range of choice for you as a first-year student. Our FLCs are modeled on successful learning communities that have been developed by other world-class universities. FLCs (pronounced “flicks”) give you the opportunity to meet classmates, form meaningful friendships as well as develop academic and personal skills.
Exclusively at SFU Surrey, two new FLCs are available:
- Global Issues: combines first-year courses in World Literature, International Studies and History*. If you are interested in global problems and a possible career in Literature, History, International Studies or Political Science, you will love this FLC.
- Social and Behavioural Sciences: combines first-year courses in Psychology, Sociology and Cognitive Science*. If you are interested in how people interact individually or in communities and are thinking about a possible career in Law, Psychology, or other social sciences, you will love this FLC.
In addition to your core courses, taken over two semesters, you will meet once a week as a FLC with your Peer Mentor for useful and fun activities. FLC meetings will address your academic, personal and social development. Topics include time management, study strategies, campus history, volunteer opportunities, exam writing, choosing a program of study, career exploration, co-operative education, international opportunities, and more. There will also be recreational and social activities, as well as group study time.
Our FLCs will provide you with a solid foundation for academic success and an exciting pathway to any degree at SFU. You will build strong skills and knowledge across a broad set of disciplines which can effectively be applied to whatever field or career you might pursue.
